How Is Paraffin Wax Produced? | Process, Types & Industrial Applications

Paraffin wax is a widely used industrial material known for its stability, versatility and cost efficiency. It is widely applied in candle making, hot melt adhesives, PVC processing, packaging, coatings and personal care products.

As a professional wax manufacturer, King Honor explains the complete paraffin wax production process.

1. Raw Material & Distillation

Paraffin wax is derived from petroleum refining. Crude oil is distilled to obtain heavy lubricating oil fractions (370–650°C) rich in wax components, which serve as the primary feedstock.

2. Solvent Dewaxing

Solvents such as MEK/MIBK or toluene are added, and the mixture is cooled to crystallize wax. Filtration separates solid wax from oil, producing slack wax.

3. De-oiling & Purification

Slack wax is further processed via solvent de-oiling or sweating to reduce oil content below 0.75%, meeting food-grade, cosmetic-grade and industrial requirements.

4. Refining & Finishing

Hydrotreating or clay refining removes impurities, improves color and odor, and produces fully refined or semi-refined paraffin wax compliant with FDA, REACH and RoHS standards.

5. Molding, Grading & Packaging

Refined wax is formed into slabs, granules or flakes, and graded by melting point:

It is widely used in candles, adhesives, PVC, rubber and packaging.

Conclusion

From distillation to final molding, every step determines paraffin wax quality. With advanced technology and strict quality control, King Honor provides high-quality paraffin wax and Fischer-Tropsch wax to customers worldwide.
