How to Distinguish Paraffin Wax From Polyethylene Wax

Speaking of the use of wax, the first thing that breaks into people's mind is that it can make candles, burn and help lighting. However, it has many uses we don't know. Today we briefly introduce paraffin wax and polyethylene wax and their differences.

Characteristics of paraffin wax

Paraffin wax is a hydrocarbon mixture extracted from some distillates of petroleum, shale oil or other asphalt mineral oil. The main component is solid alkanes, odorless and tasteless. It is a white or light yellow translucent solid. Paraffin wax is non crystalline, but has obvious crystal structure, and there is also artificial refined paraffin wax. Paraffin wax is divided into food grade (food grade and packaging grade, the former is superior) and industrial grade. Food grade is non-toxic and industrial grade is inedible.

Characteristics of polyethylene wax

Polyethylene wax is a kind of PE wax, which is a chemical material. The color of polyethylene wax is white small beads/flakes, which is formed by ethylene polymerized rubber processing agent. It has the characteristics of high melting point, high hardness, high gloss and snow-white color.

How to distinguish paraffin wax from polyethylene wax

1. Different characteristics, as described above.

2. Different application fields

Due to its high oil content, crude paraffin wax is mainly used to make matches, fiberboard, canvas, etc. When polyolefin additives are added to paraffin wax, melting point for paraffin wax increases, adhesion and flexibility increase. It is widely used in the production of moisture-proof and waterproof packaging paper, paperboard, surface coating of some textiles and candles. Fully refined paraffin wax and semi-refined paraffin wax are widely used. They are mainly used in food, oral medicine and certain commodities (such as wax paper, crayons, candles, carbon paper) components and packaging materials, coating materials for baking containers, for fruit preservation and insulation of electrical components, improving rubber aging resistance and increasing flexibility. It can also be used for oxidation to produce synthetic fatty acids.

The main applications of polyethylene wax are as follows:

  1. As a dispersant in the processing of Color Masterbatch, it is widely used in polyolefin Color Masterbatch, and has very excellent external lubrication and internal lubrication.

  2. Make dispersant, lubricant and brightener during the forming and processing of PVC profiles, pipes, pipe fittings and PE.PP to enhance the degree of plasticization and improve the toughness and surface smoothness of plastic products.

  3. It has good light resistance and chemical properties. It can be used as the carrier of pigment, improve the wear resistance of paint and ink, improve the dispersion of pigment and filler, and has good anti-sedimentation effect. It can be used as the flatting agent of paint and ink to make the products have good luster and three-dimensional feeling.

  4. As a wax product, it is widely used in floor wax, automobile wax, polishing wax, etc.
