Application of Polyethylene Wax in Waterborne Coatings and Road Paints

Application of polyethylene wax in water-based coatings

By adding emulsifiers to polyethylene wax and making it into an emulsion, and then adding it to acrylic resin, its hydrophilicity can be improved to some extent, which has anti-slip, anti-adhesion, and stain resistance effects.

Adhesion refers to the adhesion and adhesiveness of the coating surface with external substances, the contact between the coatings, which can be caused by exposure to the atmosphere, dust, dirt, and pressure. By adding polyethylene wax as an additive to the coating film, it can gradually migrate from the inside of the film to the surface. This migration can make the surface of the film produce anti-adhesive effects.

Polyethylene wax also produces synchronous effects such as anti-wear and scratch resistance. It can reduce the friction coefficient on the surface of the coating, making the tendency of sliding greater than scratching when an object contacts the coating surface.

The migration of polyethylene wax powder to the surface of the coating film can significantly reduce the dynamic friction coefficient of the coating film surface. The addition of polyethylene wax micro-powder to the paint can greatly reduce the tendency of the coating to be polished by friction, thus maintaining its durability with a low gloss finish. Polyethylene wax has obvious extinction characteristics for polyester coatings, with a general addition amount of about 1%. In addition, polyethylene wax has a certain influence on the melt flow of powder coatings and can be used as an adjusting agent.

Application of polyethylene wax in road paint

Polyethylene wax can properly control the gloss of the coating and give it a solemn feeling. It is incompatible with nitrocellulose, has high hardness and melting point, so it needs to be made into a toluene dispersant before adding it to the paint. During use, the light moves to the surface of the coating film and then to polyethylene wax particles. Through the refraction and diffusion of the particles, the light projected onto the surface of the coating film is weakened in the same direction, achieving the extinction effect.

The extinction effect of polyethylene wax of different particle sizes and varieties is also different. The ideal effect can be achieved by adjusting the amount according to requirements, ranging from maintaining full gloss to deep extinction.
